It’s Allergy Season! Tips for Allergy-Free Indoor Air

April 7th, 2021

Whether you have seasonal allergies or year-round allergies, the spring is a hard time for those who suffer from allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues. Unfortunately, there is not an air filter for outdoors, but you can improve your indoor air quality. The EPA reported that indoor air quality can be much more polluted than outdoor air due to circulation issues. Since we cannot make allergy season go away, we must find ways to cope and keep breathing. The Ferguson Heating and Air Conditioning Company family is committed to helping you have the best possible air quality during allergy season and all year long. Not only do we offer great air cleaning and filtration products, but we also want to pass along tips you can implement on your own.

Improving Allergies Indoors

Change Your Air Filter Frequently—Your filter is supposed to be the first line of defense to capture pollutants and allergens floating in your air. When your filter becomes clogged, your HVAC system will be overworked, and your indoor air quality will suffer. You should change your filter at least every three months. If you have allergies, asthma, or respiratory issues, you may need to consider changing it monthly. This could be especially important if you have an indoor pet that sheds.

Crank Up That Air Conditioning—Air conditioning does more than keep you cool. Your system also controls the moisture in your air and captures pollen. Close your windows and keep your HVAC system going this spring and summer.

Filter Out Moisture From Bathroom—When you are using your shower, use the exhaust fan to remove the moist, humid air. The excessive moisture can encourage mold and mildew if it collects in your bathroom.

Vacuum Frequently—Allergens, especially pet dander, love to hang out in your carpets and rugs. The vacuum can capture the allergens and dust so it will not be circulated and tracked throughout your home any further. If you suffer from allergies, we recommend wearing a mask while you vacuum. You are stirring up allergens and dust while you are vacuuming. These days you should have a mask nearby anyways. Wearing a mask while vacuuming and dusting can minimize the impact on your respiratory health.

Minimize Pet Dander—There are many people who suffer from allergies but still choose to have a pet in their home. We are not asking you to get rid of your furry friend, but to limit your exposure to allergens when possible. Pet dander gets embedded into their beds, toys, and any soft surfaces they lay on. Make a habit of washing their belongings and your soft surfaces regularly. Even just a simple step of keeping your pet out of your bedroom could dramatically improve your allergies. If you suffer from allergies, wear a mask when you must clean pet bedding or wash/brush your pet.

Wash Off When You Get Home—Allergens can hitch a ride on your body or clothing. If you shower and change when you return home, you can minimize the allergens floating around in your indoor air.
